Chapter eleven

A Weekend Apart

Since the testosterone war between Nathan and our friendly neighbor Bobby, Nathan has been surprisingly upbeat and more present around the house. He plans fun activities and plays with Shirley, and it’s so cute I can’t even stay angry. Instead, I’m swept up in his enthusiasm, and we spend the rest of the week watching movies almost every night. Nathan even makes breakfast in the mornings.

On Thursday, he takes the day off work to fire up the grill, inviting Matt to a backyard barbecue. Matt brings his old guitar and plays a few songs as Shirley claps and sings along. The night is perfect, and I notice how Nathan keeps his watchful eye on Shirley, ensuring she doesn’t have too many sweets. When she yawns, he immediately wraps up the night’s activities and carries her to bed.

Matt gets in his car and informs me he’ll be heading to our parents’ place for the weekend. He invites me to accompany him, glaring at me until I agree. After he drives off, it’s just me and Nathan. He doesn’t say much as we clean up, but he keeps shooting me weird glances like he has something he wants to get off his chest. He probably wants to talk about Bobby, who has taken to calling out greetings from his backyard whenever he sees me. Bobby is fun to talk to and obviously interested in me. His eyes light up whenever I laugh at one of his silly jokes, and he frequently tells me how beautiful I am.

Cassidy’s speech plays over and over in my head. If he isn’t swooping you off your feet and worshipping the ground you walk on, you are selling yourself short. Do you understand me?

Well, maybe it’s time to get over my crush on Nathan and dip my toe in the dating pool.

I wake up early in the morning and pack a weekend bag with some essentials and a few books. I head over to Nathan’s room and knock lightly on his door. It opens immediately, and I’m greeted with the sight of his bare torso. He rubs a towel over his hair, and each movement causes his abs to flex deliciously. I consciously try not to stare at him, focusing on his right ear. At least it’s a part of his body that I can stare at without melting into a puddle of lust.

“Hey. Good morning,” he says, backing up to let me in.

My eyes stray to his slept-in bed. The last time I was here, I’d been naked and in the throes of passion. I push the thought out of my mind and turn my attention back to Nathan.

“Matt is going to our parents’ place for the weekend, and I agreed to go. That means you’ll have Shirley all to yourself.”

His expression changes from curiosity to worry to doubt. Then he settles on alarm. “The whole weekend?”

“The whole weekend,” I reiterate. “You will be fine, Nate. Shirley is really getting used to living here.
